Houses at Night comes from the eclectic private collection of Richard Weaver (1909-1998), the former Secretary-Treasurer of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers.
Known as a "Lion of the Theatre World", Weaver was a longtime influential member of the American Theater Wing. A highly sought-after publicist during the Golden Age of Broadway, he represented some of its biggest shows and brightest stars including Our Town, South Pacific, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, Carousel, and Music Man. It is believed that Harold Kovner, one of Souza's patrons, was occasionally part of Weaver's weekly poker group, which included Richard Rogers, Tennessee Williams, and John Houston among others. Within his means, Weaver was an avid supporter of up-and-coming artists, having founded the Theatre Wing's very successful "Introduction to Broadway" program, and it comes as no surprise that Souza's fresh, contemporary work caught his eye.
