Lot Essay

This work, from the late 1950s, could be regarded as a precursor to Husain's famed Kerala series with its luscious foliage that almost camouflages its occupants. Characteristic of the works from this period are the ghost-like forms that the viewer has to seek out, as in the case of the seated figure at the center of the composition. A figure masterfully constructed within the tree on the left, is reminiscent in pose to classical Indian sculpture.
