Property from the Collection of a Private European The work of Diego Giacometti constitutes a universe full of dreams and poetry. His creations merge the worlds of sculpture and furniture design into one remarkable whole. His exquisitely designed and carefully crafted bronze tables, chairs, lamps, candlesticks and other functional objects were lovingly brought to life by the artist's unique imagination, his sense of proportion and his profound love of nature and the animal world. Diego considered himself an artisan whose only goal was to create beautiful and useful objects. His friends and assistants spoke of his regard to exactitude and his desire that his sculpture be practical, but also of his ceaseless creativity. The owner of the following works by Diego Giacometti (lots 401-420) was first introduced to the artist by his brother, Alberto, in 1965, however, due to their mutual shyness did not visit Diego's studio until three years later when he was taken there by Marguerite Maeght. Their friendship grew as they spent Saturday afternoons talking walks, going to the movies, seeing plays and socializing with their mutual friends, André and Rose Masson and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva. In 1982 as an extraordinary gesture of friendship, Diego Giacometti designed the household fittings, furniture, sculptural objects and architectural features for the collector's new Parisian residence as well as for his country home. Some of the works which are being offered from this collection were gifts from the artist to the present owner as a token of their friendship and represent a range of the artist's talents, wit and charm. Each work entered this collection between 1978-1985.
