Lot Essay

29th January 1962 saw the presentation of the first "Yves Saint- Laurent" couture collection in Paris. He went on to become one of the most celebrated and influential fashion designers of the 20th century.
In his initial sketches, he would design an outfit and ensure that the look is complete with perfect accessories. He would detail on his sketch, the colour of the metal for the jewel, the size, and the exact way it should be worn. He once said "My essential rule is to elongate women, and above all, to make them look thinner. After that, all that remains is to make their jewellery look bigger, and they are delighted!"
This pair of cuffs was part of his collection inspired by the sea. It was a gift from Yves Saint-Laurent to the present owner, whose couture order for that year exceeded 10 dresses.
Till today, his couture vintage jewels are still highly sought after by collectors.
