Lot Essay

The present work most likely depicts Coney Island, which at the time was the most popular of New York's beaches. While his Impressionist contemporaries preferred to paint the quieter, rural beachfronts of Long Island, William Glackens became one of the first artists to explore the pictorial delights of the more frequented and commercial Coney Island.
