Lot Essay

"The maximum contrast is Black and White... Negatives-positives, transparencies, photograms, the hallucinatory play of black and white I deduced therefrom, philosophically speaking, that white and black signs, the inevitable antinomy of the ideas of the past, like "day and night", "angel and devil", "good and evil", are in reality complementarities, a fertile androgynous idea. Coupling affirmation and negation in unity is making knowledge integral. What a prospect! White and black, it is the indestructibility of art-thought and hence the perenniality of the work in its original form" (V. Vasarely, Plastic Arts of the 20th Century Victor Vasarely, New York, p. 112).
