Note:
Huang advocated "learning from past masters," as well as from nature. With a solid training gained from copying Tang, Song and Yuan dynasty paintings, one can then focus on capturing the spirit and essence of nature. The hallmark of Huang Binhong's style of landscape painting is his achievement of dense and cohesive structures, balanced by enough moisture and freshness in the ink wash and brushstrokes. Low Chuck Tiew aptly described Huang's painting style, "there is homeliness in the vigorous force, and unrestrained spirit in his archaic style." Huang Binhong's landscapes have a strong touch of classicism. The balance of tonal variations in his mountains and trees resembles that of archaic jades - both are intricate, delicate, complex and mesmerizing.
