Note:
An exceptional example of a Chinese painting not only involves the painting itself, but also the placement and use of calligraphy; the dedication and the seals all also play a significant role in the final aesthetic quality. In Shrimp in Pond, Qi wrote that he left home for twenty-eight years and referred to himself as the descendant of Xing Tang, loosely translated as 'Star Pond', his old residence. Qi permanently moved to Beijing in the third month of 1919, and despite having been away from home so many years, he continued to use the sights and sounds of his village as his subject matter. Some scholars estimate that Qi painted this during his early 80's.
