L'élégance néo-classique du mobilier d'André Arbus, les lignes nettes des créations en fer forgé de Gilbert Poillerat, la fantaisie des boîtes et objets de Line Vautrin ou encore les gouaches de Jean Hugo sont autant de reflets d'expressions stylistiques variées qui s'entremêlent à la fin des années 30 et au cours des années 40 en France. Réunie par un amateur britannique, cette collection révèle son profond attachement à la culture française et sa sensibilité pour une époque donnée. L'Art Déco atteint son apogée avec l'Exposition Internationale de 1925, mais en quelques années ce style s'essouffle. La décennie suivante voit apparaître une nouvelle génération d'artistes et de décorateurs, qui tout en s'inscrivant dans une certaine continuité stylistique à l'opposé d'un modernisme plus radical, explorent des voies diverses et souvent apparemment contradictoires. Le goût pour les lignes sobres des années 30 se voit déstabilisé par l'influence du Surréalisme : c'est l'ère des artistes néo-romantiques et de leur quête nostalgique d'un langage poétique. Parmi ces créateurs et décorateurs, certains vont se distinguer en mettant le meilleur savoir-faire français au service d'idées nouvelles, tels Arbus, Poillerat, Adnet, Royère parmi d'autres, tous présents dans cet ensemble choisi et harmonieux. Sophisticated while characterised by charming detail, modern yet respectful of tradition, the collection of furniture and objects to which these words serve as an introduction succeeds in evoking the spirit of a brief but inspired moment in French creativity. From the neo-classical elegance of furniture by André Arbus or the crisp lines of metalwork by Gilbert Poillerat to the whimsical appeal of boxes and bibelots by Line Vautrin or gouaches by Jean Hugo, the collection very effectively weaves together the multiple inter-connected stylistic strands that define the richly nuanced character of the decorative arts of the late thirties and forties in France. The collection was constitued by an Englishman, but one with a strong affiliation to French culture and with a particular sensivity to the arts of that epoch. Art Deco had reached its pinnacle at the 1925 exhibition; by the thirties the style had lost its fashionable freshness and the new decade saw a generation of artists and designers - those who favoured a continuum within the arts rather than a radical Modernism - exploring other, diverse and often seemingly contradictory paths. This was the decade in which a new fondness for simplicity of line would be contrasted with the decorative influences of Surrealism; this was the era of the Neo-Romantic artists, with their pursuit of the wistfully poetic; and this was the opportunity to make their mark for a distinguished roster of designers and decorators, working within the finest traditions of French craft yet bursting with new ideas - among them Arbus and Poillerat, Jacques Adnet and Royère, each well represented in this thoughtful and balanced ensemble of furniture, pictures and objects.
