Lot Essay

The present work was painted in the kitchen at Tidmarsh Mill, Berkshire, where Carrington lived with Lytton Strachey from 1917 to 1924. Annie Stiles was the housemaid at Tidmarsh. Jane Hill writes 'In Annie Stiles Carrington achieved a warmth and tenderness in the girl's pink and pearly flesh that would have entranced Renoir' (op. cit., p. 62).
