In 1965, after an early career dedicated to painting, Andy Warhol decided to turn to making art films, considering experimental movies to be his core work.
During this period he devoted himself exclusively to this activity, producing an immense cinematographical opus, along with other artistic projects such as supporting the band The Velvet Underground.
He would also at the same time produce a very limited number of paintings which were not intended to be exhibited or sold and neither were they commissions. They were simply a few portraits of friends he had a close relationship with.
One of these figures, Dennis Hopper, had been close to Andy Warhol since his early exhibitions at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles in 1962. The underground actor, hero of Easy Rider, provided important support to Andy Warhol in a new artistic society.
During the same period, the artist produced portraits of figures he saw as emblematic, such as Dominique de Menil, a well-known philanthropist at the time who established the famous museum in Houston which bears her name.
The portrait we are presenting is of Sandy Brant, one of the important figures who marked a period in the painter's life. Peter and Sandy Brant played an important role in Andy Warhol's career for two reasons. Firstly, in 1972, the Swiss dealer Bruno Bischofberger and Peter Brant commissioned a series of portraits of Mao from Andy Warhol. This commission would set the artist back on the path of painting.
During the same period, Andy Warhol set up Interview magazine, an editorial project he continued until the end of his life. On the artist's death, Sandy Brant would take over control of the famous title, publishing an anthology of the magazine in tribute to the artist.
