Zhao Jingshen was a native of Sichuan. Having graduated from Tianjin School of Cotton Textiles, he joined the New People's Newspaper as assistant editor of the literature section in 1922 and later became manager and editor of Weibo. The following year he joined a group dedicated to the study of literature. He then taught at the Hunan First Normal College, University of Shanghai and the Art University. In 1927 he entered the Kai Ming book store to be editor and took up a teaching post in 1930 at Fudan University, where he remained until his death. At the same time he was editor for the Beixin (Northern New) Book Store. Notable books include New Chinese Literature, A New Study into Short Stories and Chinese Opera, A Study of Literature and many others. He also translated Hans Christian Anderson's Fairy Tales and Short Stories, as well as The Tales of Anton Chekhov.
