This painting is owned by the family of Commander Long Yun (1884-1962), who was governor of Yunnan province from 1927 to 1945. Strategically important during the Sino-Japanese War, Yunnan developed as a significant industrial and political base. After a brief exile in Hong Kong, Long Yun returned to China in 1950 and was awarded several high-ranking government posts. Subsequently, he was declared a rightist in the Anti-Rightist Movement, a denunciation that was later revoked. This image of a defiant rooster was made in 1936, and conveys a strong sense of patriotism and pride and was one of Xu Beihong's highly effective patriotic images.
