The vineyard was originally called Le Cloux des Cincq Journaux and run by the monks of Saint-Vivant de Vergy, and it became known as La Romanée-Conti after the French revolution. The vineyard has a sloping east-south-east exposure which offers the maximum potential exposure to sunlight whilst ensuring optimum water draining capability; the perfect combination for producing the finest Pinot Noir grapes. Production from this famous vineyard is tiny, with on average only 450 cases per year.

Romanée-Conti Grand Cru--Vintage 1983
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
In original wooden case, original straws. Consecutive bottle numbers 000934 to 000945. Slightly corroded capsules, one damaged. Leroy strip labels, bin-soiled and stained labels. Levels: two 1cm, eight 1.5cms, one 2.5cms, one 3cms below base of corks
Tasting note: Most recently, a magnum: its initial depth of colour now softening, rim maturing; very meaty, fragrant nose which opened up gloriously, tangy, fragrant, blackberry; fairly sweet, rich, mouthfilling, very good flavour and texture, spicy, still tannic. Not an easy wine, needing far more bottle-ageing. Last tasted November 2003 **(***)2010-2030 M.B.
