In 1902, the Pittsburgh Reduction Company (later Alcoa) incorporated a Canadian subsidiary called Northern Aluminum Company, which was renamed Aluminum Company of Canada in 1925. Alcan, as it was eventually called, separated from Alcoa in 1928. By the beginning of the 21st century, Alcan was a large conglomerate, having bought up smaller companies including Pechiney of France. In 2007, Alcoa announced a bid for a hostile takeover of Alcan, but mining giant Rio Tinto announced a higher bid which was subsequently accepted, and Rio Tinto Alcan was formed, the world's largest aluminum company. Alcan gave this Vacheron Constantin pocket watch to show appreciation to employees who had completed 25 years of service.
