Lot Essay

Husain's paintings of this period reflect his love of India and knowledge of rural life. This is a prime example of the artist returning to his roots with a favourite theme of 'Indian village life' complete with fruit laden trees, a peasant woman with her clay pot and a group of three musicians. Vivid yellows, greens and reds are comparable to those of the traditional miniaturist school, as well as the manner in which Husain has compartmentalized the canvas and treated the space: each section brimming with activity, yet merging eventually into a seamless rural idyll.
