Lot Essay

Claudia Makowski (1912-1986)

Claudia's mother was a laundry woman in Montmartre. She made vast sacrifices to send her to school, where Claudia would meet a young West Indian dancer, who was the daughter of the housekeeper of Jules Pincas, also known as Pascin. She joined his circle of friends and that of Lucy Krogh. Later she would pose for André Derain, Moïse Kisling, Nils Dardel, Oskar Kokoschka, Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita and, of course, Pascin. Her passion for painting led her to become a gallery owner and then a collector of taste and discernment.
