Lot Essay

We are grateful to Susan Morris for dating the present watercolour to 1796/7. Girtin appears to have based the present drawing on the left hand side of a painting (or the related engraving) by Marco Ricci (Royal Collection), see A. Scarpa Sonnino, Marco Ricci, Milan, 1991, p. 250, figs. 140-2.
