Lot Essay

The fifth son of a railway clerk, Lowndes left school at fifteen, and only turned to painting full time in 1949 after fighting in the army (1939-49). Lowndes was a shrewd observer of the world around him. In Red Hot Momma he depicts a lively pub scene, capturing the characteristic stance and movements of different types of colourful individuals.
