From the collection of the late Ernest Donagh Ernest Donagh (1941-2007) was born in Wednesbury in Staffordshire. He studied at Staffordshire Art School and Goldsmiths, and from 1967-1977 was a fine art lithographer for Editions Alecto and the Petersburg Press. Ernie, as he was known, was a specialist in stone lithography and collaborated with many important artists, including David Hockney, Jim Dine, Frank Stella and Richard Hamilton. An accomplished artist in his own right Ernie had many exhibitions of his own paintings, prints and ceramics throughout his life. Ernie gave his collection of prints to his three daughters, a selection of which are presented here for sale (lots 157, 162, 163, 164, 172 and 201). Given by the artist to the printer Ernest Donagh (1941-2007). Then by descent to the present owners.

Lot Essay

Toaster reflects Hamilton's interest in consumer culture and modern design. He wrote about the chief designer of the electrical goods company Braun: 'My admiration for the work of Dieter Rams is intense and I have for years been uniquely attracted towards his design sensibility; so much so that his consumer products have come to occupy a place in my heart and consciousness that the Mont Sainte-Victoire did in Cezanne's.'
