Lot Essay

The present and following lots are Devon landscapes which date to Cossington Smith's visit to England and the continent with her sisters Madge and Diddy in 1948-51: 'During her time away, Cossington Smith stayed mostly with an old school friend, Nell Campbell, at Brook Cottage near Sussex ... She also spent time with her married sister Mabel Pakenham-Walsh, and other relatives including her cousin Frances Crawshaw in Devon. ... Among her lasting memories of this stay abroad was an exhibition of landscape painting at the Royal Academy in London ... "oh they were absolutely wonderful ... the Cézanne landscapes" (D. Hart (ed.), op. cit., p.71)
