Lot Essay

The photograph's mount and signature date from the 1960s when Evans gave it to the eminent dealer, Robert Schoelkopf, for display in his exhibition of the artist's work in December 1966 (Evans' first since his show at the Julien Levy Gallery, held some thirty years before.) Berenice Abbott photographed the same doorway, 290-2 Bank Street, which was situated near the apartment which Evans shared with fellow artist, Ben Shahn.
