Lot Essay

The coronation of King George V on June 22, 1911, in Westminster Abbey, gave Evans the opportunity of photographing the cathedral emptied of its usual fixtures in preparation for the ceremony. He was commissioned by Country Life magazine to make the series and was justifiably proud of the result. He sent two to Alfred Stieglitz, with a note: 'The Across the Transepts is to me as fine a piece of atmospheric and spiritual truth as the camera need be expected to.'
