SAFAVID SHIRAZ, IRAN, CIRCA 1540
From an illustrated shahnama or khamsa, gouache heightened with gold on paper, the stricken Dara lying on the ground, his head supported by Iskandar, the two treacherous officers, Mahiyar and Janusiyar in chains to the left with other prisoners, a member of his guard standing to his left and crying, the fierce battle scene takes place above, the scene surrounded by rocks and trees, with one line of text above and below arranged in four columns, the miniature cut off and laid down on modern paper, possible minor retouching, mounted, framed and glazed, reverse with owner's marks
