Lot Essay

Whereas the stainless steel version of the celebrated "Paul Newman" must be considered the world's most popular collector's wristwatch, the gold version is certainly enhancing any Rolex aficionado's feelings. Since precise production numbers have never been published by Rolex, it is hard to describe the ratio between the stainless steel and gold output. However, based on the frequency these only ever made two versions are offered at public auction, one may safely conclude that the precious metal examples are ten if not twenty fold harder to find.
Consequently, well preserved specimen like the present reference 6239 enjoy a mythical position within the collector's world. These Daytonas are a perfect 1960s symbiosis between the rough, dangerous and masculine sporting world and the elegance available to the happy few.

Reference 6239 is described and illustrated in Rolex Daytona - a legend is born by Carlo Pergola, Stefano Mazzariol, Giovanni Dosso, pp. 44 - 61. Different versions of reference 6239 in regard to case material and dial layout are furthermore described and illustrated in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 296 - 303.
