Lot Essay

William Argent Brierley (1893-1960) first met Lowry at Manchester School of Art where the artist attended evening classes given by Argent Brierley. A friendship developed and Lowry was a regular visitor to the home of Argent and his wife Jean in Rugby. Lowry presented them with the present work and another, A Street Scene, 1948, sold in these Rooms on 13 May 1966, lot 105.
