Lot Essay

Painted with the shocking vigour and ferocity typical of Howson's work, the present lot subverts the religious story of the resurrection of Christ, which traditionally in art history has been treated with solemnity and celebration. Here the figure on the right appears to be tied to a post, undeniably suggesting the figure of Christ at the crucifixion, not resurrection. He has presented the two events as being interchangeable in other pictures, such as Crucifixion, 2010 (Flowers Gallery, London), in which Christ's cross is only illusory.
