THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED IN AUGSBURG by Günther Zainer of Reutlingen, the first printer at Augsburg, and THE FIRST OF ANY WORK BY OR ATTRIBUTED TO ST. BONAVENTURA TO APPEAR IN PRINT. Long attributed to Bonaventura, the Meditationes vitae Christi were written by an anonymous Tuscan Franciscan, identified usually as Johannes à Caulibus, for a nun of the Poor Clares. Included in it is a genuine Bonaventuran work, a 'Meditationes de Passione' (cf. Dict. Spirit I, 1851-2). It testifies to a wide range of influences, embracing the theological direction of St. Bernard and building on the philosophical conception of Hugo de S. Victore. Its influence and popularity is evidenced in the more than 60 editions published before 1501. H *3557; GW 4739; BMC II, 315 (IB. 5402); BSB-Ink B-681; CIBN B-659; Bod-inc B-441; Goff B-893.
