LI KERAN (1907-1989)
A native of Hebei province, internationally renowned biologist Niu Man-Chiang received degrees in biology from Beijing University (B.S., 1936), and Stanford University (Ph.D., 1946). He received the Guggenheim fellowship in 1954 and 1955, and the Lillie Award in 1957. At the time of his death he was Professor Emeritus of biology at Temple University, Philadelphia PA, and director, Niu Man Chiang Laboratory, Academia Sinica, Institute of Developmental Biology, Beijing. Niu's research focused on the role of messenger ribonucleic acid in cells (mRNA). Although a renowned developmental biologist, Niu was perhaps better known as a key figure in the growth of scientific exchanges between China and the U.S.. He helped found the Chinese Academy of Science's Institute of Developmental Biology in Beijing in 1980, where he directed a laboratory until his death. The institute was one of the first attempts to help Chinese researchers to rejoin the international scientific community after the Cultural Revolution. When Deng Xiaoping, then vice premier of China, visited the U.S. in 1979, Niu encouraged Deng, who knew of Niu's scientific achievements, to accept an invitation to receive an honorary doctor of laws degree from Temple University in Philadelphia. In 1997, Professor Niu and his wife Baoying attended the Handover Ceremony in Hong Kong as special overseas guests. Niu was an avid lover of the arts and sciences. Through the introduction of Professor Tong Dizhou, Professor Niu befriended Zhang Boqu's wife Pan Su, and through these friendships met many artist friends including Huang Zhou. Thirteen years senior to Huang Zhou, they made their acquaintance and discovered they came from the same hometown, a mere seven miles apart from each other.
