Lot Essay

Lots 2537, 2651 and 2702 belong to the collection of Sun Wuyin (1916-2002), an accomplished artist in Shanghai. Born in Wu county, Jiangsu, Sun studied at the Shanghai Academy of Chinese Paintings, founded by Liu Haisu (1896-1994) in 1912. Innovative for his time, Liu advocated co-educational education, the study of Western painting techniques, and natural painting. Sun graduated in 1937 and later taught Chinese paintings at the Shanghai Industrial Arts Institute. Sun excelled at bird and flower paintings with bright colours and finely painted details. Several of her compositions, as well as her collection, reveal the influence of local artist friends such as Xie Zhiliu (1910-1997).
