Lot Essay

Please refer to Lot 2727 for further information on the collection. Zijie , is Zhang Daqian's cousin Guo Youshou (1901-1978), native of Sichuan. Guo entered the University of Beijing at the tender age of 18, and was well regarded by then headmaster Cai Yuanpei. Upon graduation Guo was sponsored to study at the Paris University, where he gained a PHD. Fluent in French, English and German, Guo made friends with Xu Beihong, Zhang Daopan and other artists in Paris, and together they formed an art and literary society. Upon returning to China he was appointed second line section chief of the Republic of China's education board, as well as a committee member for the Film Censorship Board.
