Lot Essay

Please refer to Lot 2537 for further information on the collection.
The painting title Chun Zi refers to a native of Korea, Ci Cunhong. According to Bao Limin, she was a kisaeng well known for her beauty, wit and artistic talents. Zhang Daqian called her Chun Liang. Li Yongqiao's memoirs on Zhang recalls Zhang's travels to Korea in the winter of 1927 and his meeting of Ci Cunhong, who at the time was 15 years old. They established a deep bond and affinity for each other - Zhang was grateful for her care of him and often gifted her with paintings as a sign of thanks.
