etching, circa 1625, without watermark, Hollstein's second, final state, Hinterding's third, final state, with Berendrecht's address, a good impression of this rare print, just beginning to show some wear to the broadest lines on the mohel's coat, with narrow margins, a made up paper loss at the lower left corner, the lower right corner backed and repaired, otherwise in good condition

Lot Essay

This rather ambitious composition is Rembrandt's first known etching. It was rejected as by a different hand by Bartsch and some subsequent commentators, but has since almost universally been accepted as an authentic work.
