Lot Essay

This type of Strasbourg Lily watermark has so far only been recorded in another, in format and subject closely related etching of the same year, the Landscape with a Cottage and a large Tree (B. 226).
Despite the touches of burr which occur in the foreground of fine, early impressions such as the present one, Hinterding states that the print was executed in pure etching. The burr might simply be caused by the artist working too vigourously on the etching ground. (E. Hinterding, Rembrandt Etchings from the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris, 2008, (p. 423).
