Lot Essay

L'église de Civray is related to the larger oil Paysage, Civray, 1917 (Fonti no. 295; Civica Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Milan).
L'église de Civray was painted after the early death of Declide, when Severini paid a visit to the mourning family in the summer of 1917, bringing his new wife and daughter to meet them. A gift from the artist to his late friend's father, it has remained with their family to this day.
