Venuti collection, Malta, by 1895, when purchased by Giuseppe Rossetto di Alessandro, Rome, 1927, by whom brought to the United States in the late 1920s, and thence by descent.

The present composition is similar to the Annunciation altarpiece that Pieter de Witte painted in 1587 for Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria's church of St. Michael in Munich. A preparatory drawing for the Munich altarpiece was offered at Christie's, London, 7 July 2010, lot 331.
