Lot Essay

The Valencian born painter José Camarón y Boronat is best known for producing delicate, whimsical fête galantes with a particular Spanish flair, as seen in the present pair of pictures. Boronat worked in Madrid from 1752-1753 where he would have known contemporaries such as Castillo Paret y Alcazar, Carcinero and Goya. Once back in Valencia, Boronat achieved enormous financial success as an artist and can be considered a key figure in the flowering of the Rococo in Spain. Works by the artist in public collections include, Romaría and Parejas en un parquet (both Madrid, Prado).
