FRANCIS JOURDAIN
Fils d'architecte, Francis Jourdain sera d'abord peintre. Mais, remarquant que les grands artistes de son temps passent facilement d'un champ artistique à l'autre, mettant notamment leurs talents au service de la publicité, il va, quant à lui, s'engager dans la création de mobilier. Ses premiers meubles sont exposés au Salon d'Automne de 1904. Ils détonnent par leur aspect austère et fonctionnel, et par leurs surfaces sobres, en bois nu. Jourdain est l'un des premiers créateurs de mobilier à envisager sérieusement la production en série de meubles constitués d'éléments désormais interchangeables. Il refuse la tradition, préférant voir les formes qu'il crée comme un jeu de vides et de pleins. Il est ainsi, en France, le seul à se joindre aux avant-gardes anglaise et autrichienne, mettant méthodiquement en oeuvre les préceptes du fameux 'Ornement et Crime' d'Adolf Loos.
Le Corbusier jeune sera profondément marqué par les oeuvres de Jourdain exposées au Salon d'Automne de 1913. Dans cet esprit moderne, qui prône un environnement global, Jourdain conçoit aussi des tissus, des tapis, du papier peint et des objets en verre. L'engagement de Jourdain, membre fondateur de l'UAM, sera la clé de voûte d'une esthétique nouvelle, et inspirera toute une génération d'architectes et de designers qui diffusera le modernisme français dans le monde entier à partir des années 20.
The son of an architect, Jourdain had originally sought to pursue a career in painting. Impressed with the ease with which he saw the leading artists of the day transfer their artistic talents to the design of advertising posters, Jourdain began to apply his own compositional skills to the creation of furniture, the first examples of which were exhibited at the 1904 Salone d'Automne. Remarkable for their austere functionalism, and for their use of plain, undecorated wooden surfaces, Jourdain was one of the first designers to seriously consider the mass-production of furniture created from interchangeable components. Further still, Jourdain denied that his furnishings to be constricted by tradition, preferring to consider the forms that he created as exercises in solids and voids. In this capacity, Jourdain was unique in France for aligning himself alongside the British and Austrian avant-garde, through his disciplined interpretation of Adolf Loos' influential 1908 text, 'Ornament and Crime'.
Interestingly, it is noted that a youthful Le Corbusier had been profoundly impressed with Jourdain's exhibits at the 1913 Salone d'Automne. In keeping with the modernist ethos of total interior schemes, Jourdain also designed textiles, carpets, wall-papers and glass objects. Subsequently an influential founding member of the UAM, Jourdain's commitment to rational interior design proved to be the keystone of a new aesthetic - and an inspiration to the new generation of architects and designers that were to internationalise French modernism from the 1920s onwards.
