Eileen Gray's daybooks of her Galerie Jean Désert confirm the frequent sales of rugs. This indeed would seem to have constituted the most consistently successful aspect of the business, though, inevitably, the essentially fragile nature of these works has ensured that very few original examples have survived.

The present example reflects Miss Gray's appreciation of the minimalist linear graphics associated with artists of the Dutch De Stijl group. Her discovery of their work had a considerable impact on her aesthetic in the early 1920s. The name 'Wendingen' given to this design confirms the Dutch inspiration. A contemporary photograph of the façade of Jean Désert shows another example of this rug in variant colours prominently displayed in the window.

Les registres quotidiens de la Galerie Jean Désert indiquent des ventes fréquentes de tapis, laissant penser que ce sont précisément les tapis qui connaîtront le plus grand succès. Mais du fait de leur fragilité très peu nous sont parvenus.

Ce tapis renvoie à l'attrait de Eileen Gray pour le minimalisme linéaire des dessins des artistes du groupe hollandais De Stijl. Sa découverte de leur travail aura un impact sur son esthétique au début des années 1920. Le nom 'Wendingen' donné à ce tapis confirme sa source d'inspiration hollandaise.
