An ivory-white painted wood occasional table, the internal recess painted red, by Eileen Gray, for her own use, 1926-1929, with monogrammed designer's plaque applied to underside

Eileen Gray adds an element of visual intrigue to a simple geometric low table by cutting a vertical segment from the cylindrical stem and painting the inside a deep orange red to contrast with the white surfaces. As ever, Miss Gray has sought to surprise the eye and engage the spirit with details that reveal her appreciation of the potential to endow furniture with subtle sculptural qualities.

Eileen Gray enrichit cette table basse au simple dessin géométrique, d'un élément intrigant visuellement, aménageant une découpe verticale dans le pied cylindrique et la peignant dans un rouge orangé profond, qui contraste avec le reste de sa surface blanche. Comme à son habitude elle cherche à surprendre et à capter l'esprit par des détails qui traduisent sa compréhension des qualités sculpturales dont peut être dotée une pièce de mobilier.
