This is one of three watercolours by George Grosz (lots 248-250) that were a gift from the artist to Henry Cornelius, a film director who worked with Grosz on the 1955 film adaptation of the John van Druten's Broadway play I am a Camera, and have remained in his family to this day. Inspired by Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood, the film starred Julie Harris, Laurence Harvey and Shelley Winters, with the screenplay by John Collier.
