Lot Essay

'Bacon is special in my life...although I was never as close to the wicked witch as they were and he badmouthed us all. He got under my skin before I came to England. In NY in the early fifties I'd already decided that Bacon and Balthus were my favourite post-war painters and I still feel that today... We lived in the same district for his last twenty-five years and gossiped in the supermarket and streets' (Kitaj, quoted in R. Morphet, "Kitaj interviewed by Richard Morphet", in R.B. Kitaj: A Retrospective, London 1994, p. 44).
