The rectangular gilt-tooled black leather-lined top with three cedar-lined drawers to each side, the pedestals each with three graduated drawers and opposing panelled and satinwood crossbanded doors enclosing shelves, on castors, labelled 'JAMES GARDNER CABINET MAKER EASTGATE STREET ROW CHESTER ...', the metalwork replaced, one cupboard originally fitted with vertical divisions

James Gardner, cabinet-maker and auctioneer (d.1808) is listed at Eastgate Street, Chester, in 1793-95, and at Talbot Row in 1997 (see G. Beard and C. Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660 - 1840, Leeds, 1986, pp. 330).
