Heron comments on his work 'I have realised my overriding interest is colour. Colour is both the subject and the means; form and content; the image and the meaning ... it is obvious that colour is now the only direction in which painting can travel' (Exhibition catalgoue, Barbican Art Gallery, Patrick Heron, London, 1985, p.5).
