Lot Essay

Kamrul Hasan studied at the Calcutta Model ME School and later in the Government Institute of Arts, an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta, graduating in 1947. After Partition the artist came to Dhaka and together with Zainul Abedin, established the Government Institute of Fine Arts (presently, The Institute of Fine Arts) the following year. Politically active, Hasan and Abedin were at the forefront of various significant processes leading to the creation of an independent Bangladesh; reflecting oeuvres concerned with reviving and invigorating indigenous painting traditions.
