VINTAGE CLASSICS
Every once in a while, as a wine specialist, I get to work on a cellar filled with true rarities. This is one of those cellars. To me, there are two things that make this cellar truly unique. The first is the provenance. Though much of the wine in this collection is 40 years old or older, the majority of it was bought on release, en primeur or from Christie's London in the 1960s. Even this consignor's cache of first growth 1961s were bought in the 1960s, placed in his Washington D.C. custom-built temperature controlled cellar, and haven't been touched for half a century. For the wines the consignor bought at Christie's he even had many of the old auction books. This was back when there were no estimates-just page after page of amazing wines at low (even accounting for inflation) prices. Standing in the cellar, we were able to trace back specific bottles to their original purchase. The bottles of 1926 Latour, for example, were bought at Christie's London on June 26, 1969, placed in our consignor's cellar, and only removed for this sale.
The second thing that makes this cellar unique is its breadth. Sure, we're offering '61 first growths and '45 Latour and Mouton, but we're also offering a huge selection of things not often seen at auction. 1959 Pichon Baron, 1957 Montrose, 1962 Haut Brion blanc, and 1940 Latour are just a few examples from a collection that offers lovers of aged claret a rare opportunity to taste less-frequently sold vintages from a collection that offers pristine storage. Bid with confidence; there is truly something here for everyone.
Charles Antin
Château Latour--Vintage 1926
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Levels: one bottom neck, five very top shoulder, one top shoulder, one upper shoulder; short lead château and vintage embossed capsules, château and vintage brand clearly visible on cork below capsules, two slight signs of old seepage, four very lightly bin soiled labels
"More recently, high level; fairly deep rich ruby; faultless bouquet, eucalyptus; medium-dry, not as full-bodied as expected, spicy, really lovely." MB, December 2000.
