1945 VINTAGE
"Arguably one of the greatest vitnages of the 20th century, and in my opinion eclipsing the 1961." MB, Vintage Wine
1945 MOUTON ROTHSCHILD
Not only does 1945 mark year Baron Philippe de Rothschild began commissioning distinguished artists to create the legendary labels for his wines, it's also one of the most renowned vintages of Mouton Rothschild to date. Michael Broadbent's 6 star rating sums up the contents of the bottle flawlessly: "The first thing to notice is its extraordinary colour. I have on more than one occasion recognized the wine by this alone. And its bouquet is equally distinctive, in fact one of the most astonishing smells ever to emerge from grapes grown out of doors. The power and spiciness surges out of the glass like a sudden eruption of Mount Etna: cinnamon, eucalyptus, ginger, 'Friars Balsam'. Impossible to describe but inimitable, incomparable, and because of this and its appearance, several times 'guessed' blind.
Château Mouton-Rothschild--Vintage 1945
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Levels: one bottom neck, two very top shoulder; heavily bin soiled two-part victoire labels, one nicked
"I originally coined the phrase 'a Churchill of a wine,' meaning larger than life, immediately recognisable, complex, endlessly fascinating, unforgettable The first thing to notice is its extraordinary colour. I have on more than one occasion recognised the wine by this alone. and its bouquet is equally distinctive, in fact one of the most astonishing smells ever to emerge from grapes grown out of doors. The power and spiciness surges out of the glass like a sudden eruption of Mount Etna: cinnamon, eucalyptus, ginger, 'Friars Balsam' (noted once!) Impossible to describe but inimitable, incomparable, and,.because of this and its appearance, several times 'guessed' blind. There is simply no other wine like it. Its taste is a component of smell, its fragrance is reflected on the palate. Still lovely, still vivacious. Seemingly tireless-indeed another half century anticipated." MB, June 2001 at Wilfred Jaeger's mountain-top late lunch.
