1964 VINTAGE

****
"Dimiss the idea that this was anything other than a very good vintage; yet it is tarnished merely because of the very heavy but localised rain in the middle of the harvest, mainly in Pauillac and St©stèphe, which caught out some major châteaux. Ch Latour picked early and made a top class wine. Ch Lafite, Mouton-Rothschild, Lynch-Bages and Calon S©egur were all caught with their pants down. But as will be seen, even the rain-soaked vineyards managed to produce some very flowery wines. Nevertheless, it must be admitted that the very best
64's were made to the south of the Médoc, in the Graves, and on the Right Bank some outstanding Pomerols and St-Émilions.
I link the 1962 and 1964 in my mind. Both of equal quality, both of quite different styles, the '62s, as we have seen, lean, lively, acidic and and the '64s, as I hope I can demonstrate with my notes, chunkier, rounder, fruitier." MB, Vintage Wine
