Lot Essay

Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich, known also as Sandro, was born in 1866 to Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich of Russia, the youngest son of Nicholas I of Russia, and Grand Duchess Olga Feodorovna (neé Princess Cecily of Baden). In 1894, he married Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna, the eldest daughter of Tsar Alexander III and sister of Tsar Nicholas II. In 1885 Grand Duke Alexander graduated from the Naval Academy in St. Petersburg with the rank of Midshipman and remained on active duty until 1918, rising to the rank of Vice-Admiral.
