Lot Essay

The present lot is based on a design for a cup in the Russian style of the eighteenth century by a student of Moscow's Stroganov School for Technical Drawing (fig. 1). The design was influenced by historical Russian ornament recorded in the album Motivy ornamentov, snyatykh so starinnykh proizvedenii. A glazed earthenware cup based on the same design is in the Russian State Historical Museum (GIM 54097-399/1892fs).
